It’s the little things in life that matter.

Whatever.

Around here, it’s the big things in life that matter…to me.

My husband. He is 6’3″ and his heart is equally as big. He is always up for a hike, buys me my favorite movies like Love Actually on Blu-Ray, and scrubs down the inside of the splattered microwave without me asking.

My oldest son. He is 6’4″ and tells me he loves me every time he walks out the door. At 17, he’s gone more than he’s home. School, work, friends, gym. So, I hear it a lot.

My daughter. She’s 5’9″, now taller than me. She is as fun as she is sweet. Kind as she is talented. Lovely as she is loving. All that and more.

My youngest son. He now reaches my chin, having grown three inches since summer. He is a joy to be around. The twinkle in his eyes indicates that he is up for an adventure. Or that he ate the last four Oreos.

My dog. At 115 lbs., he pulls me up the steep hills when we run together (whew!), takes up 3/4 of the bed when he stretches out, and is the best popcorn-catcher I know.

Big grocery bills. Big piles of laundry. Big smiles. Big laughs. Big hugs. Big love.

Big gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving!

Is Your Refrigerator Running?

Is your refrigerator running?

We boldly would ask with a straight face, suppressing giggles. When we were kids, we’d dare each other to crank call strangers. We’d randomly pick phone numbers from the phone book.

The stranger would usually answer yes.

Then, you’d better go out and catch it!

Slam down the phone! Giggle! Snort!

Two weeks ago, my refrigerator stopped running. So, we bought a new one, pronto! Because, Thanksgiving!

Thankful, indeed. I am thankful that I can afford to buy a new refrigerator and that I can stock it with yummy things (sometimes gaggy) to eat, to nourish my family. And that we can buy extra to give to those less fortunate.

Strangers Families in our town. With food drives at my children’s schools in full force, the kids lug in bags of non-perishable food items. Last year, enough food was donated to feed 200 families for a year. Maybe this year, collectively, we can help 250 families. Whether it’s donating time, giving money, donating food items, or simply smiling at a stranger and spreading good cheer, everyone may feel a little happier, more connected, and thankful.

My new refrigerator–now stocked with a turkey, Thanksgiving fixings, and ingredients for pies–is a symbol of so many things I am thankful for:

Children. Love. Health. Connections. Happiness. Nourishment. Family.

Maybe at the dinner table, I’ll be asked: Mom, what’s a crank call? What’s a phone book? 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

There is so much to be thankful for, y’all!

The dialog between Peppermint Patty and Charlie and Marcie in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is classic. And sums up Thanksgiving.

Upon being served toast, popcorn, and jelly beans, Peppermint Patty exclaims: “What kind of Thanksgiving dinner is this? Where’s the turkey, Chuck? Don’t you know anything about Thanksgiving dinners? Where’s the mashed potatoes? Where’s the cranberry sauce? Where’s the pumpkin pie?”

Marcie: “Thanksgiving is more than eating. We should just be thankful for being together.”

Soft-spoken Marcie’s words were powerful.

Whatever you’re eating. Whoever you’re with. Whatever you’re thankful for, happy Thanksgiving!

I am thankful for you. Thank you for reading my blog.

Fill in the ending.

I am loved. My family loves me.

My children tell me daily. I never get tired of it!

Regardless, I have “love notes” my youngest son wrote me a few years back pinned to my bulletin board. And Instagrammed. And Facebooked.

To preserve. To remind. And to make me smile.

‘Tis the season to be thankful. Thankful for dirty dishes? Thankful for eye wrinkles?

It’s all in the way you look at things. I am thankful for:

  1. Dirty dishes. We always have plenty of food.
  2. Sand in my car. My car reliably transports us to the beach.
  3. Dog fur on my clothes. My puppy loves to cuddle.
  4. Expensive grocery store bills. My kids have good appetites.
  5. Long work hours. I have a good job.
  6. An errand to Home Depot. It’s a date with my husband.
  7. Being a chauffeur. My kids have interests.
  8. A noisy house. My family is thriving.
  9. Dirty football cleats. My kids are active.
  10. Gloomy, rainy days. The grass is always green.
  11. Piles of dirty laundry. I am needed.
  12. Stepping on Legos with bare feet. My kids are creative.
  13. My mortgage. My house is my home.
  14. My children yelling. They are normal.
  15. My slow-ass jogging. I am trying.
  16. Eye wrinkles. Lots of smiling and laughing going on.
  17. Exhaustion. My life is full.

Life. Health. Family. Love. Abundance. To be needed. I am thankful for it all.
