Mr. Pickle

I am a winner!

Actually, my daughter is the winner. She won a Mr. Pickle. At the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, she played skee ball with such accuracy that the dolphin leapt across the board into first place.

My daughter could be an Olympic skee baller.

She selected a Mr. Pickle as her prize and gifted him to me without prompting. OK, maybe a little. I could not resist his greenness, his glasses, his mustache, and his little shoes. And the fact that he was shaped like a…giggle…pickle. I gleefully accepted, squealing Thank You!

Mr. Pickle was promptly secured with a seatbelt in the back seat, as he quickly became the newest member of the family.

With a daughter like mine, I too, am a winner.

Mr. Pickles!

The Sausage

I’m shrinking! Not really.

But my new “slender” swimsuit? Whoa!

This one-piece swimsuit claims that it will make you look a whole size smaller.

No kidding. When you first step into the leg holes, be prepared to get sucked. Yanking and tugging the material up over your mid-section, you break a sweat. Then, there’s the stretching and pulling the suit up to your armpits. Whew, time for a water break. Finally, one arm strap then the other, and hooray! Time for the cool down. Afterward, I feel that post-workout accomplishment.

Then looking in the mirror, I’m like, damn! This suit doesn’t only make you look a whole size smaller, you are actually a whole size smaller. Because you lose a few pounds just putting the damn thing on. In the meantime, you kinda feel like a sausage.

Pass the mustard sunscreen.

Marigolds and Counting Cars

One car. Two cars. Red cars. Blue cars.

When I was a girl, my grandmother and I played a game. We sat side by side on the grass in the shade and stared out at the highway to count cars.

My grandmother lived outside of the town limits. Alongside a country highway. Where you could hear the train’s whistle blow. Catch a whiff of a skunk at the wood’s edge. And where you were surrounded by an abundance of marigolds, which my grandmother tended with love and care with her green plastic watering can and expert dead-heading skills.

When I visited, she let me care for the marigolds. And when we needed a break, we counted cars. I picked blue. She picked black. Then we’d count. Whoever picked the most colors won.

Sometimes I picked red and she picked blue. Your odds were best if you picked black, blue, and red. Trust me.

Time stood still for us, as the cars whizzed by.

After all these years, whenever I see marigolds and smell their tomato aroma, I am reminded of my grandmother and the sweet, simple times we spent together.

Marigolds remind me of my grandmother.

Summer is a Dandelion

Take one look at the community pool. It’s empty now. Marking the official end of summer. Empty pools always make me sad. An end of playing dolphin tag, cannon balls, SPF 50, riding foam noodles like horses.

To me, summer was not just swimming. It was family and fun, camping and hiking, bubbles and frisbee, peaches and beaches, adventures and picnics, ice cream and more ice cream, Otis and cloud-gazing.

Summer is a dandelion. Its life is short, but it’s full of magic and memories. When you blow, the magical seeds spread and root. Until one day, there’s a whole field of dandelions. A sign that the memories of summer will live on.

They emptied the community pool for the season. This makes me a little sad.

Peachy Keen

My daughter and I went peach picking. And we bought like 40 lbs. of peaches.

So for the past two weeks, it’s been pretty much peach everything. Just like Bubba said. But instead of shrimp, peaches.

“Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There’s, um, shrimp kababs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp and lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich…That, that’s about it.”

To me, peaches are summer. Biting into a fresh peach–especially one I’ve just picked from the tree, one that has been warmed by the sun–and have that juice drip down my chin and get my shirt all stained? Yep, that’s about it.

How do you like them peaches?

Let it Go

“Let it go.” For someone who likes to be in control, letting go is not always that easy. But impulsively going to the lake with the kids on a hot Summer day was easier than I thought.

But I have to work. Work will be there in two hours. Let it go.

But I don’t have time to pack a picnic. Go to Subway. Let it go.

But I didn’t bring my swimsuit. No one will care if you swim in your shorts and tank top. Let it go.

But the lake is greenish and kinda slimy and chilly. It’s nearly 100 degrees. Let it go.

I let it all go. And jumped into that greenish, kinda slimy, and chilly lake. Fully dressed. With my belly full of Subway. Guess what? It was the best, freeing, unplanned afternoon of the Summer! (So far…)

That's my girl!

Not Busy as a Bee

“How have you been?”

“I’ve been SO busy.”

I didn’t ask you how busy you’ve been. But thanks for telling me. Yawn.

The other day, I wasn’t busy. Instead, I wandered my backyard with my camera. I took in the Summer colors, smells, and sounds: purple, lavender, buzzing.

I sat down to observe the bees busily humming. Like I was Jane Goodall or something. (But with bees, not gorillas.) It was nice not to be busy as a bee.

So, the next time someone asks me, “how have you been?”

“I’ve been enjoying Summer.”

We have a neighborhood, community pool, in our city park. Kinda like the pool in the movie The Sandlot. In fact, I don’t think the pool has been renovated since 1962, when that movie was set.

Our pool is subsidized by the local Lions Club, so you can swim for $3. And you pretty much get what you pay for.

The pool paint is chipping. And if you’re not careful, you could stub your toe on a crack. There are few chairs on the pool deck and many loose Bandaids in the pool. I am sure of it. The concrete steps that lead down to the changing area, that is housed in the basement, reek of Pine-Sol. You kinda don’t want to know.

But. On a 90-degree afternoon, as an adult, you ignore all of the details. You simply run and jump into the deep end, like you are nine years old again, and yell “cannonball!”

If Summer ends unofficially on Labor Day, then here is a warm hug to send it on its way.

To me, this was Summer:

Thanks for the great memories!
