I don’t know whether to holla at Rihanna for her top honors as the most viewed female artist on YouTube (beating out Lady Gaga), article here. Or to roll my eyes that she has gotten there by marketing her sex appeal (gasp).
Don’t get me wrong, I like hot dance music. I am also pro-feminism. And yo, you have to be 18 years old just to watch her S&M video on YouTube because of “explicit lyrics.” Oh, and yo, her fan base is probably tweens under the age of 14.
Still, her marketability stats are impressive:
- Rihanna is the best-selling digital artist of all time, according to Nielsen Soundscan, which provides sales data to the music industry.
- Rihanna has sold 47.5 million digital downloads.
- Her video S&M has 35 million YouTube views.
- Rihanna was runner-up for Esquire’s 2011 Sexiest Woman of the Year. (I won. Did you hear?)
Rihanna is laughing all the way to the snakeskin-short-shorts bank…
In case you’ve been living under a rock, here is her S&M video.
