Life is like a conveyor belt of chocolates…it’s moving fast and you can only wrap so many chocolates before you can’t keep up and you start stuffing them in your mouth and in your hat.

For a refresher, check out this I Love Lucy episode…

Besides being totally hilarious, this scene is a great metaphor for a busy family life.

Life moves fast and a lot of everything has to be done at once: working, meal prepping, exercising, connecting, schooling, playing, listening, cleaning, shuttling, grooming, relaxing.

I need to constantly prioritize and re-prioritize. Don’t you? Because we can’t do it all. Maybe, like Lucy and Ethel, we need to pick and choose some of the chocolates to wrap… Every other one? Every two?

And if some chocolates fall onto the floor or get stuffed into our blouse, that’s just the conveyor belt life in motion.

This is so true! I try to prioritize, but I find that there are some things I really just have to let fall to the wayside. Other things I try to combine – I spend time with my kids and exercise together by playing hard, running around with the baby in my arms and chasing the toddler, let the kids help make dinner…but between the job, the kids, the daily to-dos, there’s never enough time. I love the metaphor – pick and choose the chocolates that you can manage and stuff the rest down your blouse!

I hear you! You give some great examples of combining jobs and responsibilities. No one can do it all or even half of it. 🙂

I loved this episode when I was a kid.

It’s true though, there is no way anyone can do all of it. At least not if you expect to *gasp* have a little time to do some of the things you want to do as well.

Boy, this is the truth! I hope it gets better when I retire, whenever that is. I must admit it’s better with the children grown, but life still keeps moving even when I want to stand still for a while.

Exactly! And then you bring up the whole “have to dos” vs. “want to dos.” And then sometimes you just want to chuck a chocolate at someone. 🙂

I think life moves fast no matter what, don’t you?

Great metaphor for our busy lives. I love that episode, one of my favorites. If only we could slow down our conveyor belts… savor the flavor. It’s worth the effort. Thoughtful post.

That’s my favorite I Love Lucy episode! And yes, it does feel like juggling eggs, doesn’t it?

That’s my favorite too! Oh and the one with the grapes. That could be a metaphor too…too many grapes to stomp.

Yes. Juggling eggs. I sometimes really suck at it.

Thank you for writing! Yeah, if we just could slow it down and savor the chocolate instead of stuffing it into our blouses…

I appreciate your comment!

How I love this episode!! Life moves so fast, too fast these days. But, do what you can, eat a chocolate or 2…
This is a great reminder to me that I truly don’t need to have it all together. Thank you.

I think we all need reminders. I know that I do. Daily. Whew!

Pippi, you crack me up! LOVE the Lucy clip. Yes, life just keeps on rolling along and we should try to keep up the best we can. I think we can both agree keeping your sense of humor is essential to survival! 🙂

Hahah what a classic episode. I agree, a great metaphor for life!

Loved this! I’d never thought of that Lucy episode as a metaphor for life, and it really is, isn’t it? I’ve definitely stuffed some chocolates down my blouse in my day 🙂

I don’t think you could have come up with a better clip to illustrate your point…

I mean, I love chocolate, don’t get me wrong. But I’m letting a lot of them fall on the floor these days.

And my blouse? DANG. Don’t look in there. Plus, it’s not a blouse. It’s an old t-shirt over stretched-out sweats.

What is this “grooming” of which you speak, anyway?

Ah yes. That’s a chocolate on my floor for sure…

Yeah, right, who wears blouses these days? I do for work out of sheer force. 🙂

And if they drop on the floor, just kick them under the table. Who will ever know? 😉

I stuff them somewhere every dang day!

When you think of tasks and responsibilities as Lucy and Ethel and the chocolates, it makes me smile at least. 🙂

I’m glad. 🙂

Yes a sense of humor helps keep me in check. So much is so silly, when you take a step back.

What an adorable, hilariously accurate post. I never thought about that I Love Lucy episode being a metaphor for life but YES! 🙂

Thank you! Anything chaotic and out-of-control can easily be a metaphor for life. Ha! 🙂

Of course it was the noted 20th-Century scholar Ferris Bueller who said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. ”

Amen.

Thanks for the refresher on that scene. So funny!

Glad you liked it…it’s one of my favorites! And helps put a busy life into perspective.

I love Ferris. He is so wise. I think we should all take a day off regularly and do all the fun things we love, don’t you?
